What to wear to a hip hop dance class
Short answer: Wear comfortable clothes you can move in, plus clean sneakers unless the studio says otherwise. Hip hop classes usually do not require a uniform, but check the class page for special rules, especially for heels or floorwork.
A simple outfit
- Top: a T-shirt, tank top or sweatshirt that lets you lift your arms.
- Bottoms: joggers, sweatpants, leggings or shorts that let you squat and step wide.
- Shoes: clean sneakers are the usual choice. One Chicago studio listing for hip hop asks for sneakers directly.
- Hair and jewelry: tie back long hair and leave off anything that could catch or swing into your face.
Layers help, because you will warm up quickly. Baggy clothes are fine as long as they do not get under your feet.
What to bring
- Water
- A small towel
- A clean pair of shoes if yours have been outside in rain or snow
- Your booking confirmation
When the rules are different
Heels classes: these may need heels or specific shoes. THE HIVE lists special instructions on its Adult Heels class, so read the class details before you go.
Floorwork: some classes spend time on the floor. The Puzzle Box recommends knee pads for one of its burlesque hip hop classes.
Studio rules: some studios restrict street shoes in the dance room. If you are not sure, contact the studio before class.

Common questions
Can I wear jeans to a hip hop class?
You can if they let you move freely, but stiff jeans can limit squats and floor movement. Stretchy pants or joggers are usually easier.
Do I need special dance shoes for hip hop?
Usually not. Clean sneakers are the common choice, but follow the studio's rules if they differ.
